'culture vulture'

The Royal Ballet and The Pixies. Don't exactly go hand in hand do they? Well they did in my day. Not too long ago I went on a Royal Ballet trip with my school for a 'select few', obviously I wasn't chosen for it but that is one of the ups about having a 'senior member of staff' mother... I guess. She signed me up for it so in the day I got to cut school and go watch Ballet all day, now I wouldn't consider myself a big ballet fan, it's not my scene because at those events I always feel so scruffy and clumsy as I watch the ballet students gliding past with their slick back hair and their feet out turned like penguins. But once I got into the theatre I have to admit I thought it was beautiful, there were some very raunchy scenes in the play we went to see we saw a lovely range of rape, heroin, murder and all sorts but it was portrayed it the most beautiful way...
But whilst sitting there I suddenly remembered that that night I was going to see one of my favourite bands touring the album I basically grew up to: The Pixies -Doolittle. And although the dancing was lovely I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could see them.

We went to see them at Brixton academy, it's a rare occasion my whole family go to a gig together but it's one of those bands that our family all agree on. You see, I always agree with my older brother Franklins taste in music. And a lot of his influence comes from my dad, that sounds geeky I know but my dad has an amazing CD collection. So there we all were and we'd watched the one supporting act 'The Big Pink' and then they started playing scenes from the film 'Chien Andalou' by Robert Dali because that's what they're song 'Debaser' is about.

When they first came out the first three songs were from the B side of Doolittle, so I had no idea what was going on, what songs they were playing but when they played their first song from the A side I was off right into the front. When ever I'm at gigs I always get some one being protective over me because I'm short and a girl but here people let me be which... maybe wasn't such a good thing, let's just say in the verse of tame I had to hold my nose so it wouldn't get broken. But it was an unforgettable gig, and an unforgettable day two completely different worlds and somehow for that day at least, there was a place for me in both.
